Orthopedic Problems

The term “Sports Medicine” is a little misleading. It implies a specialty area that focuses only on athletes, which is not the case. Part of the push to develop the field of Sports Medicine was to find better ways to treat athletes’ injuries, in hopes of achieving faster and more complete recovery, hence optimizing performance. However, recreational athletes, cowboys, housekeepers, vacationers, firefighters, construction workers, gardeners, hikers, and people who simply have a “slip-and-fall” all sustain the same types of injuries that athletes do. Hence, patients of all ages and walks of life benefit from what we have learned in the study of Sports Medicine.

I have always enjoyed covering teams and caring for high level athletes, but, from my standpoint, an office worker’s or laborer’s or “weekend warrior’s” knee or shoulder is just as important and interesting, and deserves the best that we can offer.
